Born in Glasgow, Robert studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College Of Art, Dundee 1993 – 1997. He was awarded the John Eadie prize for painting and The John Kinross Travelling Scholarship in 1997, allowing him to work in Paris, Florence and Germany. His monumental ‘Shroud’ painting was awarded the coveted Exhibitions Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute, October 2002. A major exhibition of his work was held there in 2003.
Through consistently reconciling traditional working methods with an attitude of painterly experimentation, Macmillan’s work is charged with an emotional intensity while demonstrating meticulous technique. Layer upon layer of paint builds to create depth and luminosity, as well as a sense of weight and presence.
He exhibits widely in Scotlnd with recent exhibitions at the Scottish Gallery and at the Open Eye, Edinburgh.
His work is held in several major public and private collections including The Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh and in the collection of the author JK Rowling
